Postcards from Real Life: The Fantasy of Nature

Awhile back I shared with you the story of how the Disapproving Beagle got his middle name. It was a tale of Natural Inspiration courtesy of George. Today though I get to share with you a little insight into Fred’s world.

You see, Fred is Camp Granola’s fantasy boy. He’s insanely creative; wears a black hooded cloak just about everywhere he goes; and is constantly drawing, writing, and constructing mythical worlds. He also happens to be a pre-teen which of course means I get a good bit of attitude tossed into our days just to keep me on my toes.

So imagine my surprise when I discovered that, after giving me such grief about the time I spent photographing this tree, that it ended up being the inspiration for one of his creations. And when I look back a much of what he’s created, it’s frequently based upon the natural places we visit…swamps, mountains, deserts, etc. They set the stage for imagination to run free and there he finds his strength. And that makes all of the road trip efforts and hiccups worthwhile…

A single dream is more powerful than a thousand realities. – J.R.R. Tolkein

But “my” tree showing up in Fred’s work…now that’s an Honorable Mention!
