Postcards from Real Life: Longing

This was the view I was denied at Great Sand Dunes. It’s kind of a rite of passage at the dunes, to make it all the way to the top. Beyond the act of making the climb and the mental and physical challenges it represents, the view is unlike any other. Looking down on the dunes from within the dunes, surrounded by a sea of sand, having crested dune upon dune to get there… it’s spectacular!

There is a third dimension to traveling, the longing for what is beyond. ~ Jan Myrdal

So while I’m pleased with my time there last year in spite of the problems, this is something I wanted to do very badly and I’m left still with a bit of longing for an adventure denied me, a longing for what lied beyond the edge of the dunes… my missing third dimension.

With plans for our next big expedition underway, I’m including the Dunes yet again and I will hopefully quench that longing by returning once more. I know you’re surprised. 😉

Obviously I didn't make it to the top to get this image. It's courtesy of fellow Tremont Junkie, Steve Zigler, who has instructed me to mention it's an iPhone shot because he was too much of a wuss to take his precious Nikon out in the sand.

  1. Thanks for posting this, ValinRealLife. I’m looking forward to seeing YOUR shot from this location!

  2. Thanks Steve! I will certainly back for my shot but I think we need to have a Junkies intervention to get you to take your real gear to the top. 😉

  3. Never seen so much sand. Camp Granola seems like an interesting place.

    1. Great Sand Dunes is truly a marvelous place by my account. There are certainly places with more sand but the contrast between the dunes and the grandeur of the Sangre de Cristos is breathtaking. So love being able to take my Camp Granola crew there!
