Happy hour is a big deal for my dear man and me. That evening ritual anchors us in the fuck-all chaos of running this business together. And life chaos in general.
These days we spend a lot of happy hours enjoying the birds and deer in our familiar backyard while we decompress and process the day. But when we were on the road, the scenery was always changing.
We landed in this boondocking spot after a long transit day filled with unexpected delays. We’d fallen short of our intended destination and this was a last-minute where-the-fuck-are-we-going-to-camp-tonight scramble.
After the whole rigamarole of setting up the trailer and camp (it’s quite an ordeal) we flopped into our camp chairs for happy hour. Sure enough, this gorgeous sunset began to shape up. I figured I best get off my ass and set up the camera gear.
I’m glad I did in spite of really not wanting to after a long day. This digital watercolor I made from that effort has become one of my most popular pieces.
And I’m damn grateful for photographic muscle memory. Because being worn out, I relied on that to be able to compose and shoot it fairly quickly then flop back into my chair. That’s a big contrast to my harder-earned captures.
I’m ok with an “easy” win on this one—which is actually years of hard work paying off. So if you’re looking for a big take away, it’s keep practicing. It pays off in the long run.
Cheers!
