Postcards from Real Life: Growth

Postcards from Real Life: Growth

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The growth and transformation of our yard into a biological mini-sanctuary is a long play. But we’re getting there.

Sometimes in this exercise, I try to avoid the obvious interpretation of the week’s theme. But sometimes I simply use it to nerd out of the obvious, especially when it comes to plants.

And it’s spring so the plants around us are growing and blooming like crazy. So, yes, I’ll be dipping into the obvious this week.

Much of the time I share images from my extensive adventures in our public lands. But this week I’m reveling in the growth of my own yard because the joy is two-fold.

There’s the growth of the individual plants that makes me giddy. But also the growth of the property itself—a revival from a neglected and abused plot to something thriving and valuable.

Keep in mind it’s a long play to get a yard from a mat of puncture vine to a thriving mini ecosystem. It takes patience and a metric shit ton of time and energy to turn around a landscape that’s been a shit show for decades. So we’re embracing the longevity of the project even though sometimes we’d like it to go a little faster.

This week’s image is my attempt to show some of that growth as our wildflower grottos mature and transform our yard into a little sanctuary. And as we head into June which is National Pollinator Month, that growth is crucial in providing proper habitat for pollinators.

Cheers, friends! Here’s to growth and transformation!
