I didn’t know I had such deep thoughts about “openings” until I explored this week’s Bluesky Art Show theme.
Openings come in all manner of shapes, sizes, and concepts. And I hadn’t put the word under the microscope until now.
Windows and doors come to mind first in the literal sense. But I also think of flowers opening. Jobs have openings. Events—usually art shows in my world—have openings.
Chess games have opening moves. Baseball season has opening day. Jobs have openings. There are grand openings and soft openings of stores and restaurants. The list goes on and on.
Openings most often connote chance. Opportunity. Or willingness. All of which represent a metaphorical door to step through and explore what lies on the other side.
Openings sometimes even signify relief. I couldn’t get through life without yoga hip-opening poses. Opening the throttle on my motorcycle spills over into the re-opening my mind from the cruft of life.
In general, opening is positive. It’s shrouded in hope and optimism for what’s to come.
Sure, there are negative examples if there are openings where you don’t want them. My home renovation project comes to mind. But largely in the way I think of the word, openings are happy.
It was tempting to feature an image of a beautiful doorway or similar architectural opening for this theme. But instead, I thought of this shot.
Peering into the blindingly bright Nevada sky through this opening at the top of a charcoal oven seemed appropriate to share this week. It captures the transition from an enclosed, cold, dark place opening into a blank slate to fill with experience and a rich life not knowing what lies ahead. The sky’s the limit.
Cheers, friends. Here’s to exploring all the opportunities life’s openings represent.
PS—I eventually turned this image into funky, abstract, composite digital art you can find on my art site.
