Our family beagle’s soft ears were the source of much comfort over the years.

Back in 2010, this sweet beagle stole our hearts. He brought our family so much joy and comfort. The kind only a beloved pet can provide.

He had a big personality wrapped in his small, perky body. My memories of him are filled with his antics, playtime with the kids, countless miles walked together, and our cross-country adventures.

More than anything, what stands out are the simple times when the kids would stop to pet him or curl up with him and stroke his soft fur.

Sometimes it was a detour as they were passing by. But so many times though, they sought him out for the comfort of his soft fur and unconditional love.

But those ears! Those ears were the softest, silkiest, most soothing part to cuddle.

Bingo was often my photographic muse. He came into my life soon after I’d been bit by the photography bug. He was mostly a willing model. And his expressive face and beagle antics left no limit to the photographic opportunities.

This shot has always been one of my favorites because it shows his soft ears and the details of the colors of them so well. It was a quiet, contemplative moment in the Bingo world.

In that moment, the black flecks of fur mixed into the brown show up like the heavy metal minerals in the sands of Great Sand Dunes. And it reminds me of his nature-inspired middle name.

When this week’s theme was announced, there was no hard decision or hesitation on my part. I knew exactly what “soft” meant to me and which image I had in my library I wanted to use.

Cheers, friends! Here’s to the comfort of our soft friends in a very hard world.
